Running the provided build and test scripts

TFS Admin Tool contains scripts for building and testing modifications to the source code. You can find these scripts under the Verification Scripts folder.

To perform a build, run the following from the command prompt

build.cmd [clean rebuild] [debug release fxcopdebug fxcoprelease]

clean and rebuild are the build types

debug, release, fxcop-debug, and fxcop-release are the different build configurations.

debug and release configurations build TFS Admin Tool and then build and run its installer.

The FxCop configurations build TFS Admin Tool and then run FxCop on its assemblies.

To run a TFS Admin Tool test pass,

Edit the TestConfig.xml file to describe your TFS installation and to identify test accounts. See section 3.1 in the TFS Administration Tool Test Plan located in the doc directory.

run the following from the command prompt

runtests.cmd [debug release]

runtests.cmd runs the TFS Admin Tool unit tests and scenario tests.

The scenario tests require having access to your own TFS Server.

All scenario test output is written to scenarioOutput.txt.

More information is available in the TFS Admin Tool Test Plan.doc under the doc folder.

Updated Wiki: Previous Announcements

Previous Announcements

03-08-11-Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 released
Since the release of TFS Administration Tool 2.1, many of you have reported issues related to the inability to manage Reporting Services role on your Team Foundation Server 2010. The problem was caused by the fact that the server was returning an empty URL for the Reporting Services web service instead of the valid URL. I have worked together with the Team Foundation Server product group and they were able to track down the root cause of this behavior. I am pleased to inform you that the issue has been fixed in Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1.

As you can read in Brian Harry’s blog post, Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 will be available to later today, March 8th, to MSDN subscribers and on March 10th to non-MSDN subscribers. Please download and install Team Foundation Server 2010 Service Pack 1 on your server and let the team know if you are still experiencing problems with the Reporting Service role on Team Foundation Server 2010.

12-19-10-TFS Administration Tool 2.1 released
We are pleased to announce that the final version of TFS Administration Tool 2.1 has been released. TFS Administration Tool 2.1 is the first release of the tool which is built on top of the Team Foundation Server 2010 object mode and it can be installed on machines running Team Explorer 2010.

Please download TFS Administration Tool 2.1, and let us know what you think about the tool. In case you run into a bug please open work item and include either the contents of the "Output" window or the contents of the log file saved in the "Logs" folder so that our team can easily reproduce and investigate the problem. TFS Administration Tool 2.0 is built on top of the Team Foundation Server 2008 object mode, and in order to support connecting to Team Foundation Server 2010 you will have to install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010.

This release contains minor user interface improvements and fixes to the bugs that were found in TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta.

Please download TFS Administration Tool 2.0, and let us know what you think about the tool. In case you run into a bug please open work item and include either the contents of the "Output" window or the contents of the log file saved in the "Logs" folder so that our team can easily reproduce and investigate the problem. In order to support Team Foundation Server 2010 RC, you will have to install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010 before installing TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta.

In this release apart from fixing the bugs that were found in the CTP release (you can find the list of bugs in the release notes), we have also implemented a new feature - User Import.

User Import
This new feature allows administrators to copy user permissions between two team projects on the same server. In order to use this feature you will have to connect to at least two team projects from one server. In case a user already exists in the target team project his/her permissions will be overwritten with the permissions from the source team project. The outcome of the import operation is a set of pending changes which will be listed in the "Pending Changes" dialog and it will be up to the administrator to commit the changes.

Please download TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta, help us test the newly added feature and help us iron out the last bugs before the RTM release. In case you run into a bug please open work item and include either the contents of the "Output" window or the contents of the log file saved in the "Logs" folder so that our team can easily reproduce and investigate the problem. Please feel free to remove the confidential information like user accounts, or server names.
Download TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta

12-06-09-TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP released
We are pleased to announce that the first community tech preview of TFS Administration Tool 2.0 has been released. This CTP marks a new beginning for the TFS Administration Tool as we have almost completely redesigned and rewritten the tool. We had the code checked in the source tree for some time but in the last couple of weeks we have decided to add Team Foundation Server 2010 Beta 2 support before making it available to the public.

In order to support all available versions of Team Foundation Server (2005, 2008, 2010 Beta 2) we are still using Team Foundation Server 2008 object model. That means that all you need to run TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP is Team Explorer 2008 SP1. Since this is a CTP release we wanted to make sure that TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP can run side-by-side with TFS Administration Tool 1.4 so in case you are running into any blocking issues you can fall back to the latest stable release. In case you are running into any blocking issues please make sure that you file a bug for it.

In order to help us investigate possible bugs we have added an "Output" window to the tool which captures all tracing messages of the tool. The contents of the "Output" window are also saved to disk when closing the tool into the "Logs" folder. We would like to ask you to attach these logs to the bugs that you file. Please feel free to scrap the confidential information like user accounts, or server names.
Download TFS Administration Tool 2.0 CTP

10-26-09-Support For 2010
There is support for TFS 2010 Beta 2 forthcoming. I'm not ready to publish a timeline but it will be as quickly as possible. As you likely realize there are some new considerations to take into account for 2010 such as Project Collections and likely changes as well around how the tool needs to handle the SharePoint authentication. I'll post more as more information becomes available.

4-26-09-TFS Admin Tool 1.4 Production
Version 1.4 has been released. Build 1.4.90426.1. It really has few user level changes from the 1.4 Final Beta. Some of the reports on the final beta have been pushed into the next release or as of yet unrepeatable from our end. Ladislau Szomoru and Peter Blomqvist have been working hard on 1.5 that has some significant changes in terms of user experience (it may end being a 2.0, I don't know yet, but they have been referring to it as 1.5. We'll definitely have a major version number change when Team System 2010 is released. What the feature set will need to be will change drastically and the configuration of environments could be much more diverse making it a challenging release for this tool. It may be like starting over.

4-02-09-TFS Admin Tool 1.4 Final Beta
The new default build is the 1.4 Final Beta (Build 1.4.10402.1). There has been a Beta 2 since the last announcement that was also released but not noted here.
I recommend that you try it out if you have your Sharepoint Admin site on a non-default port, or if you are running a team project without a sharepoint or reporting services site.
Special thanks to Ladislau Szomoru and Peter Blomqvist who did most the work for this build.

3-14-09-TFS Admin Tool 1.4 Beta Released
The 1.4 beta is available and provides support for SQL Server 2008. It also addresses a number of other issues you will see on the release page.
Special thanks to Steve St. Jean for digging in and getting the SQL 2008 support going.
Download 1.4 Beta

3-05-08-Forthcoming Release
We will be creating a new release whose primary goal is to address work item 18247- "Error with TFS 2008, SQLServer 2008 on Windows 2008" but the release will also include a few additional bug fixes/enhancements that are already in process or that can be fit in within the time box to fix 18247. This time box is as of yet undefined but the delivery target date will be defined within the next week When this release is complete we'll start another iteration to address a larger set of defects and enhancements and will continue on until no one finds value in adding to the tool any longer.

There will be some additional wiki pages added to assist in planning and current discussions that have kicked off this effort will be moved to that location and to inside the forum for wider participation. Speaking of wider participation, I would like to invite anyone and everyone to contribute. Right now the best mechanism is grab the code, make the contribution you'd like and upload a patch. I want to get much wider contribution. There are a lot of users out there and a lot of scenarios and a lot of people with good stuff to contribute. So send it on.

Please blog/tweet/*cast/yell that we are actively taking contributions and requests and tell everyone to "come on in the water's fine". Keep a close eye on the discussion area of this project. We'll be adding some wiki pages but a lot will begin in the discussion forum.

1-24-08-TFS Admin Tool 1.3 Released
This release is an upgrade that works with TFS 2008. In additional has few UI enhancements like Display Name column and additional bug fixes. I want to take the time to recognize the great contributions from Michael (mruminer) and the TFS team for their support.
Download TFS Admin Tool 1.3

1-2-07 - TFS Admin Tool 1.2 Released
This release adds the ability to administer a TFS installation configured to only accept SSL connections. The TFS Administration Tool allows Team Foundation Server administrators to manage user permissions on all three platforms utilized by Team Foundation Server: Team Foundation Server, SharePoint, and SQL Server Reporting Services. The tool also allows administrators to easily copy user permissions among team projects and to easily identify any missing permissions on any of the three platforms.

View the Requirements for installing TFS Administration Tool.

Check out the Team Foundation Server Power Tools from the Team Foundation Server team here.

Announcements

12-19-10-TFS Administration Tool 2.1 released
We are pleased to announce that the final version of TFS Administration Tool 2.1 has been released. TFS Administration Tool 2.1 is the first release of the tool which is built on top of the Team Foundation Server 2010 object mode. TFS Administration Tool 2.1 can be installed on machines running Team Explorer 2010 or Team Foundation Server 2010.

Please download TFS Administration Tool 2.1, and let us know what you think about the tool. In case you run into a bug please open work item and include either the contents of the "Output" window or the contents of the log file saved in the "Logs" folder so that our team can easily reproduce and investigate the problem. Please feel free to remove the confidential information like user accounts, or server names.
Download TFS Administration Tool 2.1

5-16-10-TFS Administration Tool 2.0 released
We are pleased to announce that the final version of TFS Administration Tool 2.0 has been released.

Please feel free to remove the confidential information like user accounts, or server names.
Download TFS Administration Tool 2.0

2-14-10-TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta released
We are pleased to announce that TFS Administration Tool 2.0 Beta has been released and it brings support for Team Foundation Server 2010 RC.

View the Requirements for running the TFS Administration Tool 2.0

Check out the Team Foundation Server Power Tools from the Team Foundation Server team here.

At the moment the only alternative solution is to first establish a connection to a Team Foundation Server and run test after the connection has been established. The development team is currently working on a patch for this problem and when it will be released I will post a link to it on the project's home page. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks, Ladislau

New Comment on "Requirements"

I know you are not responsible for it but after installing Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update for Team Foundation Server 2010 on Windows 7 x64 and XP x86, I am not able to open the Test Results window or run tests from the GUI. I get an Exception has been thrown by the Target of an Invocation message and an OK button.
