User Group Administration

I am configuring a new instance of TFS2010 and am attempting to assign a group of developers to a specific role within a project collection.  The role is to be viewers/contributors basically.  

Since we will have multiple collections in TFS, I'd rather just create a "Developers" group and add folks into that and then assign the group to the various collections.

The problem I'm having is that even once I've assigned the group to the collection, the members are not able to perform the assigned operations, view/update etc.  

From the web interface they can see the collections but they cannot drill down into them.

I'm sure I'm just missing something basic and appreciate any insights that someone may have.
